Today I am up with a quicktip series article. I will share a tip for finding the computer (or some people say it Hostname) name using an IP Address of it. Usually ping is a command used to check the connectivity between the computer and any other networking device. When you do a ping command to an IP Address the device it will actually send and receive few data packets between the origin and destination devices. By looking at the reply we can determine if the destination device is active. Using the same command we can determine the computer name as well.

We will use the same ping command but we will add “-a” switch before we type the destination IP Address. (Use the switch without the quotes.)

Here is the screenshot for this command in action.

You can even try this command without adding the “-a” switch. See the difference what you get.

Here is a quick tip for an annoying problem you may be currently facing in Facebook. It’s Tagging yeah it can be really annoying when someone tags you in some of his pictures posted on his wall. When these tagging happens all your friends can see that you are tagged on to these images as this image will be displayed on your wall. This was a always a concern when the tagging was introduced. Finally Facebook is addressing these issues and introducing more privacy features.

Tag Review is one among them to monitor the tagging and approve/reject by your wish. By default this feature is in disabled state so in order to make use of this feature you need to enable this feature under the privacy settings. Let’s see how to do that!

Click on the Privacy settings

Click on Edit Settings link on How Tags Work option.

Click on the Off link to see the tagging enable window.

Enable the tagging enabled as you see in the screenshot

That’s it once you click on Enabled all the tagged items will come for review and you can decide whether to approve them or reject them.

We have recently shared a few tips for saving the battery energy on your Android tablets, but today I have a quick tip to share with you for saving some energy without turning off the Wi-Fi every time. It is indeed not so easy to turn off the Wi-Fi every time so by keeping this in mind Android developers has added a Wi-Fi Sleep policy in the latest Firmware updated released for Android Tablets.

You can go to Settings> and select Wireless and Networks> Wi-Fi Sleep Policy to configure the Wireless radio.

Click on the Image to enlarge

The recommended setting is to keep the settings on “When Screen Turns off” This setting will turn off the Wireless radio on the tablet and help to save the energy.

Click on the Image to enlarge

How are you managing your Gmail mailbox now? How are you stacking your mails now?... more »

How are you managing your Gmail mailbox now? How are you stacking your mails now? Well we could create sub folders to archive emails on Hotmail and Yahoo mail. But in Gmail its bit different when it comes to sorting emails and here they call it as labels. I was bit disappointed when I see labels instead of folders in Gmail. But I found this more flexible afterwards because we are provided with rules to auto labeling the emails. If you are not aware of the Gmail Labels and still have n’t started using it then this tutorial is for you!

So we are going to learn how to create custom labels and move your mails to it.

1) Go to Mail Settings in your Gmail account (On the right side top click on the Options button and select Mail Settings)

2) On the Mail settings menu click on Labels.

3) Click on the Create New Label to start creating a label.

4) Here I am creating a label called “Internet” then click on Create button.

5) You will see a new label got created there also you will see the new label on the left side of the Gmail window.

6) You can customize the label by click on the drop down button.(See the below screenshot)

7) So in order to move one email, you need to select the emails you would like to move and then click on the Move To drop down menu then select appropriate Label to complete the task.

That’s it. So create more labels for your Groups and Friends!

This quick tip for all those who wanted to create an additional drive on their newly bought computer with Windows 7 preloaded. By default when you purchase a new computer the factory loaded system will have only one single partition, but many people will wish to have a secondary drive for convenience as they can better arrange the data. We have seen software like EaseUS to manage the drives which does an impressive job. But Windows 7 is capable of doing the disk management efficiently without having any tools. We are going to see how it can be done on Windows 7.

Context: We have around 280 GB of hard drive space and it has a single partition. We will be creating a secondary drive by splitting the C Drive.
1) Go to Disk Management in Windows 7 (Type in Disk Management in the Search box, It will show you “Create and Format hard disk partitions” click on that to open Disk management console)

2) Right click on the C Drive(Primary partition) and then click on “Shrink Volume”

3) In few minutes after calculating the disk size you will see a prompt for setting a size to shrink the C Drive(Depends the disk space you can specify the disk size here as how much size you will require your C Drive)
In my case total size was 270543 MB (Which means 270543/1024=265GB)

4) When you press Shrink it will create a new drive with the remaining space on the hard drive.

5) Right click on the newly created drive (Shown in black color) and click on “New Simple Volume” (complete the “New Simple Volume” creation wizard)

6) That’s it; in few minutes it will format the new drive and make it ready for use.

Do you know that you can remotely signoff from your Gmail session? Imagine that you have been to your friend’s place and sign in to your Gmail account! While return you have remembered that you have forgotten to sign off from your Gmail account. If such things happen with Hotmail or Yahoo mail the only remaining thing you can do is, login to your Hotmail or Yahoo mail account and reset your password. That will make the session expired on the other end.

But on Gmail Google they have provided with a remote sign off feature to help you in such situations. Click on the Details link you see on the bottom of the Gmail page. It will bring up the Sign-in activity of your Gmail account. By clicking on the “Sign out of all other sessions” will disconnect all the active session other than the one you are on.

Google Chrome adds support for directly pasting an image file from clipboard. So far Chrome was providing the ability to drag and drop attachment to the Gmail. When Chrome adds this new direct pasting support in Chrome they can expect more users for Chrome Browser. By introducing this new feature Google has reduced the Chrome user’s one extra step while attaching the web images to the email.

Currently only Google Chrome users can experience this feature but in the future other browsers may also adopt it. If you have already tried and did not see this features working on your Chrome don’t worry you need to update your Google Chrome to enjoy this newly introduced feature. I have been trying from Google Chrome version 11 and later when I upgraded to the version 12 I was able to use it.

I wish if Google adds the feature for custom resizing the image in the message box. Currently it gives 3 options for resizing the image which are Small, Medium and Large. But if there was an additional option to drag and resize the image it would be great!
